Inspired by the Christian values of Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop, nā kahu o Kamehameha present Advent devotionals for ‘ohana to reflect upon. Join us as we kick off a month-long video series celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and the joy of the holiday season. KS Kapālama Kahu Manu Naeʻole contributed this story.
My living room is a mother’s nightmare. Hot Wheels cars are toy landmines and every step is cautious. Two sets of Thomas the Train tracks go in seven directions and run non-stop, including sleeping hours. A marble run adds to the chaos but only operates when one pulls the marbles from the mess of cars, trains and tracks. My son wakes up groggy every morning, wiping sleep from his eyes. When he steps from the bedroom to the sprawling chaos, his smile is a mile wide and his eyes brighten like Mānaiakalani in the summer sky.
His mother’s nightmare is the hope-filled realization of his joy: his toys.
Advent season is the first in the church, a time of expectant waiting for the one who is our hope-filled realization of joy.
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given" – Isaiah 9:6
Yet, the arrival of the Son comes only after a season of waiting. In the Advent season, we wait. We wait to find hope that tomorrow will be better, to find love that knows no end, to find joy that meets every sorrow, and to find peace to calm storms. Waiting for the Christ Child’s arrival, the arrival of hope fulfilled is the Advent season.
Join our Kamehameha Schools ‘ohana for Advent as we share weekly video messages and await the arrival of the Son given to us. On Christmas Eve, the messages of hope, love, joy, and peace meet in the fulfillment of the child born to us, Jesus. When the Christ Child arrives, as we walk out to meet Him with chaos all around us, our smiles will turn wide and our eyes will light up because, just like a child and his toys, we see the fulfillment of our joy: Jesus.
