KS maintains security on its K-12 campuses, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To contact the campus security office, call (808) 842-8320 or (808) 842-8332 (A security officer is present at the Makuakāne Main Gate 24/7.)

Access to the campus is strictly controlled from 8AM to 2:30PM and 7PM to 5 AM during regular school days of the regular school year (August through May). Procedures during the summer may vary in accordance with Summer School and other program hours. The Makuakāne, Puna, and Makanani gates are equipped with video monitoring equipment. All entry to and exit from the campus is monitored through the campus security camera system for the protection of faculty, staff, students, and parents.

The campus access procedures are as follows:

  • New Kapālama parking decals shall be issued to parents/legal guardians and sponsors.
  • All vehicles shall permanently affix the decal to the inside of the front windshield in the lower left-hand corner and all occupants must show a valid photo ID.
  • Visitors must make arrangements with their respective campus offices 24 hours in advance via phone and/or email. Unannounced visitors will be subject to delay or may be turned away.
  • Upon arrival, all visitors shall report to the designated campus office.
  • Prior to departure, visitors shall check out at the designated campus office.

  • Parent Volunteers shall be allowed access if they have the parking decal, KS parent volunteer ID card and a valid photo ID. Clearance for volunteers is handled by our KOA‘E (Kapālama ʻOhana and Alumni Engagement) department.

All drivers are expected to obey speed limits and all traffic signage and markings while driving on campus. Please follow the posted campus speed limit which is 15 MPH on most campus roadways. Also, please be considerate of our neighbors as you exit the Puna Gate where the speed limit is 15 MPH on that public roadway.

Parking on campus is a privilege.

Visitor parking:

Please refer to KSK Campus Map for parking locations and gate hours.

Student parking:

  • For students who wish to drive and park on campus, please see the Student Driver’s Manual
  • For questions regarding student parking, please call the ‘Akahi Student Center at (808) 842-8531.

Students are not allowed to drive or park on campus during the school day unless they have obtained a Kamehameha student parking decal or a one-day student parking pass. Student parking is restricted to designated parking areas on the campus.

Parents have the primary responsibility for ensuring that their sons and daughters get to and from school safely. Permission for students to drive and park on Kapālama campus provides one option for meeting the need for transportation. Therefore, when the privilege of driving and parking on Kapālama campus is granted to a student, it is important for him/her to safeguard that privilege by abiding by the driving/parking rules and regulations. The school attempts to be consistent in applying penalties for infractions of driving/parking rules. Parents are expected to support the school in regard to student driving policies and not expect that the rules and penalties that apply at the time of an infraction will be changed to suit their needs of circumstances.

Students accepting the privilege of driving and parking on Kapālama campus are responsible for abiding by the following rules and regulations:

  1. The student will operate a vehicle with a current safety check, registration, and no-fault insurance card.
  2. The student will park only vehicles registered with the Security Department in the zone assigned.
  3. During school hours, the student is not to loan his/her vehicle (s) or parking tag to another student.
  4. The student will not drive on Kapālama campus during the school day (7:35 a.m. to the end of period 8 or the end of any mandatory meetings/rehearsals). This includes driving to and from chapel, assemblies, large group meetings, etc.
  5. The student will obey all posted speed limit and regulatory signs on Kapālama campus.
  6. The student will yield the right of way to all pedestrians.
  7. All parking lots and vehicles are off-limits during school hours.
  8. The student will NOT transport passengers in the back of his/her pickup truck or in the trunk of his/her vehicle.
  9. The student is not allowed to operate a motorcycle or moped on Kapālama campus.
  10. The student will submit to a search of his/her vehicle at anytime upon the request of proper authorities.
    1. If any student is suspected of being under the influence of any impairing substances, they will not be permitted to operate a vehicle. They will be detained on campus until a parent or designated adult would be able to provide them with safe transportation to depart campus. Disciplinary consequences for being under the influence of any type of drug or alcohol may be imposed per the Student and Parent Handbook.
  11. It is understood that the responsibility for a privately owned vehicle parked on Kapālama campus lies with the individual driver/owner.
  12. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL THE SCHOOL REIMBURSE THE OWNER FOR THE COST OF REPAIR FOR THEFT OR VANDALISM.
  13. The student should report any tampering, loss or damages to his/her vehicle that occurs on Kapālama campus to Security at (808) 842-8320 or (808) 842-8332.
  14. Students cannot use faculty and staff vehicles unless they are registered for student parking and parked in designated parking lots.
  15. Students are responsible for informing the Security Department of any changes to their registered vehicles, i.e., license plate numbers, color or insurance company.

Upon arrival on campus, ALL visitors ‐ including parents, relatives and caregivers must stop at the main gate to check in with security. They must then report to the school office before going to a classroom or anywhere else on campus. All visitors are expected to follow school rules to ensure that visits do not disrupt the learning environment or endanger the safety of students or staff. Upon KS’ request, at the end of the visit, visitors must report back to the unit office, sign out and return the KS ID badge.

KS depends on parents, relatives, and community volunteers to enhance its curriculum and to make such things as field trips and special activities possible. In order to provide the safest environment for students and volunteers, KS requires every volunteer who will be in direct contact with students for an extended period, and/or on a regular basis, to complete a volunteer application form available at the principal’s office.

Before working directly with the students, volunteers may be required to complete the following:

  1. an annual criminal history record check. This information is kept in a confidential file
  2. annual KS volunteer training certification
  3. a valid TB clearance on file if anticipated to have contact with K-12 students for more than thirty cumulative days within a twelve-month period

Upon arrival on campus, volunteers must report to the school administrator authorized to supervise the volunteer. At the end of the field trip, special activity, program, or service, at KS’ request volunteers should return to the authorized school administrator’s office to sign out, unless alternate arrangements have been made.

KS facilities are smoke-free, vape-free and drug‐free environments. All visitors and volunteers are expected to adhere to this policy. Smoking including the use of electronic smoking devices (except in designated smoking areas), drinking, or use of any illegal substance is prohibited on school property (including parking lots, bus terminals, KS vehicles and rental buses), at school‐sponsored events, and at field trip locations. Any person under the influence of drugs or alcohol shall not be permitted on school property or at school‐sponsored events.

In all cases, KS reserves the right to refuse to allow visitors or volunteers, including parents, relatives, or caregivers, to participate in its programs and services if, in the opinion of the administrator, there exists a reasonable belief that the visitor or volunteer may pose a risk to the health, safety or welfare of the students.

All KS campus facilities are smoke-free, vape-free, alcohol free, and drug‐free environments. All employees, students, visitors and volunteers are expected to adhere to this policy.

Alcohol

It is the policy of the Kamehameha Schools to prohibit the possession, distribution and/or use of intoxicating liquor on Kapālama campus or at school activities by any employee, visitor, volunteer, contractor, or student enrolled at Kamehameha Schools.

Under Hawai‘i law, a person commits the misdemeanor offense of promoting intoxicating liquor to a minor if he knowingly: (a) sells or offers for sale, delivers, or gives to a person intoxicating liquor, and the person receiving the intoxicating liquor is a minor; or (b) permits a person to possess intoxicating liquor on property under his control, and the person possessing the intoxicating liquor is a minor.

Drugs

As prohibited by state and federal law, Kamehameha Schools students, employees, visitors, volunteers, or contractors are not permitted to be under the influence of, possess, manufacture, distribute or sell illicit drugs at Kamehameha Schools sponsored or approved events, on Kamehameha Schools property or in buildings used by Kamehameha Schools for its educational or recreational programs. Students and/or employees and visitors found to be in violation will be subject ot discipline, up to and including termination/release from Kamehameha. Criminal penalties such as arrest or conviction resulting in probation, fines, and imprisonment may also occur.

Safety is our #1 priority here at Kamehameha Schools. Our Emergency Operations plan (EOP) is in place as a guide for various types of potentially threatening situations internally (i.e., active threat) and externally (i.e., natural disasters). Regularly scheduled emergency drills are conducted in partnership with the Operations Division and Kamehameha Security.

The purpose of the EOP is to:

  1. Provide emergency preparedness response instructions, information, and guidelines for protecting students, faculty, and staff at Kamehameha Schools, as well as to describe the responsibilities of staff members, for a wide range of emergency and disaster situations that may occur. In the event of a widespread emergency, such as a hurricane, it is recognized that available government resources will be overtaxed and may be unable to respond to all requests for assistance.  This plan assumes that the Kapālama campus must be self-sufficient for a time and may be required to provide shelter to the immediate community.
  2. Provides guidance to Elementary, Middle and High Schools and the Incident Command Post.
  3. Integrate and coordinate emergency response with municipal, county and state emergency preparedness efforts.

Scope: This plan applies to emergencies occurring on Kamehameha Schools Kapālama property or emergencies that occur off-site that affect Kamehameha Schools’ students, faculty, staff, and property.

Limitations: It is the policy of Kamehameha Schools that no guarantee is implied by this plan of a perfect response system.  As personnel and resources may be overwhelmed, Kamehameha Schools can only endeavor to make every reasonable effort to respond based on the situation, resources, and information available at the time.

Kamehameha Schools has established a campus-wide emergency response plan for each school that is designed to provide administration, faculty, and staff with guidance in the event of emergencies. The goals of the plan are to:

  • Ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors
  • Minimize disruption of academic programs and business operations
  • Minimize property losses
  • Assist the community in time of emergency

KS’s emergency operations plan is activated any time a Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) warning is issued. In such a case, parents can obtain information about school or their children in the following ways:

Emergency Communication:

  • Mass Notification: Our mass notification system can send broadcast emergency emails, recorded phone messages, and texts effectively reaching thousands of recipients within minutes.
  • Radio: Announcements about school closure or evacuation may be broadcast over local radio stations, such as: KSSK 590 AM; KCCN 1420 AM; 92.3, I-94, and 93.9 FM; and KINE 105.1 FM
  • Telephone calls: In the event of an emergency, parents may call KS’ main switchboard at (808) 842-8211 or toll-free at 1 (800) 842-IMUA. Parents will reach the KS operator or hear a pre-recorded message with the information about the status of the school and students.

If you have questions about the KS emergency response plan, please call each individual school office or refer to your student-parent handbook for more information.
